ESI (Employees’ State Insurance) Registration

ESI (Employees’ State Insurance) registration is a mandatory process for employers in India. It is administered by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and provides financial assistance and benefits to employees in case of any work-related injury or illness. ESI stands for Employee State Insurance, which is a self-financing social security scheme administered by the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.

The ESI scheme covers workers employed in factories and establishments that have 10 or more employees (in some states it is 20 or more employees) and pays wages up to Rs. 21,000 per month (Rs. 25,000 for persons with disability). The scheme provides various benefits to injured workers and their dependents, such as medical care, sickness benefits, maternity benefits, disablement benefits, dependent benefits, funeral expenses, etc.

ESI registration is required for all establishments employing 10 or more employees, including factories, mines, plantations, construction sites, shops, ports, railway establishments, and newspaper establishments. However, there are a few exceptions where ESI registration is required even if there are fewer than 10 employees. These include hazardous industries, establishments employing children, establishments employing women in the unorganised sector, and establishments employing workers with wages exceeding INR 21,000 per month.

Employees covered under ESI registration are entitled to medical facilities and treatments through the ESIC dispensaries and hospitals. This includes medical expenses, diagnostic tests, and hospitalisation. ESI provides maternity benefits to female employees, covering both prenatal and postnatal periods. The benefits include paid leave for a specified duration before and after childbirth. This support is crucial for female employees to manage their health and responsibilities during the critical phase of pregnancy and early motherhood.

The scheme provides cash benefit to the insured workers who suffer from partial or total loss of earning capacity due to an employment injury or occupational disease, at the rate of 90% of their average daily wages, for the duration of the disability. The benefit is payable from the day of the injury or diagnosis of the disease, without any waiting period or contributory condition. The disablement can be temporary or permanent, and the benefit can be periodic or lump sum, depending on the degree and duration of the disablement.

 ESI registration provides financial assistance for rehabilitation and vocational training to employees with disabilities caused due to work-related accidents. Employees covered under ESI registration are entitled to maternity benefits, funeral benefits, and unemployment benefits. In the unfortunate event of an employee becoming disabled due to employment-related injuries, ESI Registration offers disability benefits. The compensation provided helps the affected employee cope with the financial challenges arising from the disability.

ESI registration aims to promote social security by providing financial assistance to workers and their families in times of need. The scheme provides a lump sum payment of Rs. 15,000 to the dependents or the person who performs the funeral of the deceased insured worker, to cover the expenses of the funeral.
